Do you double cleanse?

Updated: Mar 26, 2021

What is double cleansing?

Double cleansing is not something that we all do or even hear about doing, it is simply taking your makeup off twice to ensure you are removing everything A double cleanse consists of two different cleansers. First an oil-based cleanser to remover your first layer of makeup. Then a water based cleanser to deeply remove everything you missed.

Do I need to double cleanse?

Firstly, not everybody needs to double cleanse. If you find yourself constantly suffering with clogged pores then double cleansing is something you should consider. It is helpful for someone who wears lots of makeup, constantly protects their skin with SPF and of course people who suffer with oily- acne prone skin. If you fail to remove these then they will build up causing your skin to look dull and lack radiance. This is one of the reasons why I don’t like makeup wipes as they do not remove your makeup completely. (check out why I don’t like makeup wipes blog post).

Why we should double cleanse now

Wearing a face mask is now essential which of course is so important but does have a negative impact on our skin causing more sweat, sebum and bacteria to build up. For this reason, it’s pretty important for us all to be double cleansing. (check out my blog post – How to deal with Maskne)

How to cleanse

Oil cleansers are ideal for removing makeup, SPF, sweat and sebum. Mixing oil and water-based products together means you’re really cleansing. Think of your first cleanse as removing your makeup, Then your second cleanse will be the part where you wash your face - to remove dead skin cells.

· Firstly, begin to heat the oil-based cleanser in your hands and apply to your face in light circular motions, really dissolving your makeup and impurities.

· Then go in with your water-based cleanser on a cotton pad to remove the last few bits you’ve missed.

· Rinse your skin with cool water to close and tighten your pores or else use a toner. Your pores open when exposed to warm water/air leaving them prone to bacteria. So, it is important to always put a cold face cloth on your skin after a hot shower, workout or anytime your face is warm.

After cleansing you want to be sure to moisturize and hydrate you skin with a moisturizer.

Is it bad if I don’t double cleanse?

People that don’t wear lots of makeup don’t necessarily have to, they can just use the one cleanser but I would use two large cotton pads to make sure your removing sebum and impurities from the day. (check out my blog post - what cleanser should i be using)

Should I cleanse in the morning?

Yes 100%. Your skin regenerates itself overnight which means you would have Bacteria and oil from your nights sleep to remove in the morning. You don’t want them to build up and cause clogged pores and spots.
