What I think of makeup wipes

Updated: Mar 26, 2021

Makeup wipes for me are a big No, No. But since everyone's skin is different, the concerns with makeup wipes may or may not affect you personally. I'm aware there convenient but to be quite honest I wouldn’t say your cleansing your skin at all. You cleanse with wipes, then apply expensive serums on top. These serums are not going to penetrate into the skin because makeup wipes leave behind a film of sebum, dirt and debris.

Unfortunately, face wipes strip the skin of its natural barrier. When this barrier is damaged the skin becomes irritated. They contain alcohol, perfumes and preservatives to give them a long shelf life. These ingredients sit on the skin and are not rinsed them off with water, causing lots of irritation and allergic reactions. The skin becomes dry and dehydrated, resulting in fine lines and wrinkles. The whole point of cleansing is to get rid of excess dirt, debris and sebum. A build-up of these causes clogged pores.

When you use face wipes you pull at your skin, its easier to be rough with a wipe, especially around the delicate eye area. Once you're finished you either throw them in the bin or down the toilet. But where do they go from there? Think of the impact they have in the environment, ending up on oceans and beaches.

Alternative

Use a cleanser and double cleanse. It takes 3 minutes so you have no excuses. When you use a cleanser you massage your skin which stimulates the circulation. Improving skin tone.

If you really want to use them

Of course, it's okay to use them after a night out, exercising, or camping but for everyday it will result in your skin becoming dry, tight and overly sensitive. Try and stay away from wipes with really long ingredient lists. Look for the ones that have some benefit like glycerin for hydration and moisture, or aloe for soothing. If you want to use them to take off a heavy layer of makeup then that’s fine, but double cleanse after to ensure that you are removing any residue the wipe left behind. If I had to recommend any face wipes, I would go with La Roche Posay Effaclar facial wipes which have micro exfoliating beads to help unclog pores. Neutrogena Hydro Boost Cleanser Wipes as they are suitable for sensitive skin and contains glycerine and hyaluronic acid.

At the end of the day face wipes will never compare to washing your face.
