What do facial oils do for your skin

Updated: Mar 27, 2021

There are numerous oils on the market, making it difficult to determine which one is best for you. There is also multiple misconceptions about oils that make people avoid them. Many people think because they have oily skin that they should avoid using oils. When, in fact, this is not the case. Oils are suitable for all skin types and have multiple benefits. There are a myriad of oils to choose from; the most important thing is to select the right one for your skin type.

Overall benefits of oils
  • Essential fatty acids

  • Vitamins

  • Antioxidants

  • Strengthen the skins barrier

  • Prevent damage from free radicals

  • Increase skin elasticity

  • Not just for dry skin - all skin types

  • Trains the skin to rebalance if over striped from harsh chemicals

Cleansing oils

The use of facial oils as a cleanser is extremely hydrating. They do not overly strip the skin of its natural oils and instead protect the skins barrier. Oils are highly effective for removing makeup and can be the best cleanser for dry, inflamed, dehydrated and sensitive skin types.

  • They’re very gentle and assist with moisture balance

  • Contain antioxidants

  • Reduce inflammation

  • Balance your skin - preventing it from over producing oil

Different types of oils

Rich oils - Argon oil, sunflower oil and castor oil. They are rich in essential fatty acids and vitamin E, which hydrate the skin and have anti aging properties.

Fast absorbing and lightweight oil - Kiwi seed oil

Antibacterial oils - Treats acne prone skin. This oil contains antibacterial and anti-inflammatory qualities. Oils are great to help build your skin’s natural barrier as this can be damaged due to the intensity of acne medications.

Rosehip seed oil - Helps heal the skin. Its rich in vitamin E, C, D, A, and essential fatty acids. It helps to keep the skin hydrated reduce scars, stretch marks, and decreases erythema with rosacea.

How to use

When using an oil, its important to use a moisturizer too and be sure not to replace it as your moisturizer. Oils keep the skin hydrated but they do not introduce moisture to the skin. They act as a film and lock in the moisture already present. Apply your oil after your moisturizer as your last step.

My recommendations

Codex Beauty Bia wash off cleansing oil

Codex beauty, the sustainable Irish skincare range is a brand that stands out for me. There light oil to milk cleanser helps to balance the skin and remove makeup and impurities. I place a small drop onto the palm of my hand to warm it up. It glides smoothly onto my skin and removes my makeup almost instantly. Cleansing oils are the best for removing makeup and this one is great for dry, flaky, and itchy skin. Borage prevents water loss within the skin, while blackcurrant seeds rejuvenate and energize the skin and chia seeds hydrate and balance.

Codex Beauty revitalizing facial oil

Codex Beauty’s Bia oil is a light dry oil that absorbs quickly. This oil is designed to suit all skin types and works particularly well for dry, flaky, and itchy skin. It contains Rosehip oil which soothes and moisturizes the skin. Bog myrtle to provide antioxidants and prickly pear to sooth skin tone.

Holos multipurpose oil

Another oil which I think is fantastic is ''This is more multi use plant oil'' by Holos. This multi-purpose oil can be used as a facial cleansing oil, a bath and body oil, a hair and nail oil as well as a beard oil. This product is suitable for all skin types. It contains omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and essential fatty acids. I've been using this as a hair oil as it helps restore the natural oils that are frequently stripped away from over washing.
