7 tips to prevent Maskne
Updated: Apr 10, 2021
We're all adjusting to wearing face masks every day. Either you’re a healthcare worker wearing it for hours or only a couple of times a day. Unfortunately lots of us are suffering with Maskne. The humid environment in your mask is the perfect breathing ground for breakouts from bacteria, sweat, and sebum building up.
Consider what material your mask is made from
Synthetic materials can cause irritation if you have sensitive skin, these include nylon and polyester. 100% cotton masks are probably the best as there quite soft with a tight fit to prevent movement. Anti-Microbial films on the inside prevent the growth of bacteria. If your mask doesn’t fit right, you'll be touching and moving it around which will cause more irritation and possibly dermatitis.
It goes without saying but it's so important to wash your reusable mask. It will stop the spread of infection and maintain healthy skin.
Creating a Skincare routine for Maskne
1. Use a Salicylic Acid cleanser: For breaking down dead skin cells.
2. Use an Oil free moisturiser: If it contains either Dimethicone or ceramides then this will create a barrier from your skin and your mask.
Silicon base products are fantastic for forming a barrier as well, especially if you suffer from dry, irritated skin.
3. Keep the skin hydrated: Encourages healing and skin repair - Hyaluronic acid, ceramides and squalene.
4. Protect your lips: petroleum (Vaseline)
5. Avoid harsh products such as Vitamin A (Retinol), Vitamin C during the day: Apply them at night-time and cleanse in the morning.
6. Skin that is already chafing: Apply a thick barrier cream such as zinc oxide or petroleum to protect the skin from any more damage.
7. If your wearing a mask for the day, try to avoid wearing makeup:
Your skin will be covered with the mask anyway and your makeup will only be blotchy. What I think is a great idea is to bring a cleanser to work and cleanse your skin on your lunch to remove oils. If you really want to wear makeup, try purchase products that are non comedogenic and oil free.
